中国科学院计算技术研究所recently achieved a milestone in autonomous chip design, unveiling the Enlightenment No.1 processor – the world's first CPU chip entirely generated by AI without human intervention. Built upon the RISC-V instruction set and featuring a 32-bit architecture, this processor has successfully undergone mask verification and run Linux operating system and SPEC CPU2000 benchmark tests.
While its performance is comparable to Intel's 486 processor, this breakthrough holds significant implications for the field. Prior attempts at using AI for automated chip design were often too simplistic to be practical; however, the Enlightenment No.1 employs BSD algorithms and binary guess graphs to generate over 400 million logic gates within just five hours – a feat four thousand times greater than what GPT-4 can accomplish.
Although relatively small compared to current CPUs, advancements in AI technology suggest that future generations of chips will be designed autonomously, significantly boosting efficiency in chip development. These self-generated chips hold tremendous potential for innovation in the semiconductor industry and promise faster, more powerful products for consumers.
