国轩高科的一位负责人徐兴无 recently shared his insights on the future of power batteries at the 2020 New Energy Vehicle Supply Chain Innovation Conference in Nanjing.
According to Xu, current electric vehicle battery technology often faces trade-offs between energy density, lifespan, cost, and safety. To address these issues, he believes that solid-state batteries will play a crucial role in the next generation of power batteries. Solid-state batteries use solid materials instead of liquids for electrodes and electrolytes, offering higher energy density and better safety compared to traditional lithium-ion batteries.
Xu explained that there are three main directions for the development of power batteries: eliminating cobalt (Co), adopting hydrogen fuel cells, and advancing solid-state battery technology. The "no Co" route involves replacing Co with alternative materials like silicon or phosphorus iron compounds to increase energy density while reducing environmental impact. Tesla and other companies are already exploring this approach.
The "hydrogen" route involves using hydrogen as an energy source for fuel cells. Hydrogen is abundant and can be obtained sustainably from renewable sources like solar or wind power. However, widespread adoption of hydrogen fuel cells faces challenges related to infrastructure development and high production costs.
Solid-state battery technology offers a promising solution by leveraging advancements in materials science to create more efficient and safer battery systems. While solid-state batteries have their own set of technical hurdles to overcome before they become commercially viable, Xu believes that they hold significant potential for improving overall performance.
In conclusion, based on Xu's analysis at the conference held on September 16th last year; it appears clear that national high-tech enterprise such as nation wide group is looking forward towards developing new technologies specifically focusing on “solid state” lithium-ion battery which could potentially replace existing liquid-based counterparts due its superior properties such as increased efficiency along with reduced risk factors associated with fire hazards when compared against conventional ones; thus paving way towards making them safe reliable eco-friendly alternatives suitable enough not only just cars but also various other electronic devices alike providing us much needed sustainable solutions without compromising quality standards expected out our modern day life style!
